Einstazgruppen
Einstazgruppen are mobile killing units/squads composed primarily of German SS and police personnel. Collectively these were known as "Special Action Squads."
The Einstazgruppen were told to concentrate on killing Jews, gypsies and officials of the Soviet Sate and the Soviet Communism Party.
Einstazgruppen used local Nazi-sympathisers to tell them where Jews lived and would round them up and execute them by firing squad.
The Germans formed four Einsatzgruppen.
Einsatzgruppen A – Attached to Army Group North – 990 men
Einsatzgruppen B – Attached to Army Group Centre – 665 men
Einsatzgruppen C – Attached to Army Group South - 700 men
Einsatzgruppen D – Attached to German 11th Army - 600 men
Three of the four commanders held a doctorate, whilst one was a double PhD; Dr Franz Walter Stahlecker ( Einsatzgruppe A), Dr. Dr Otto Rasch ( C), Dr Otto Ohlendorf (D). Einsatzgruppe B was commanded by Artur Nebe, then head of the Criminal Police (Kripo).
